Costa volleyball 2020

It was a near-perfect weekend for the Mira Costa boys volleyball team.

The Mustangs were the top seed in the Best of the West Invitational and went 3-0 in pool play while dropping only one set.

In the Gold Division playoffs Saturday, Mira Costa swept its games against Woodbridge (25-20, 25-18), Poway (25-19, 25-18) and Huntington Beach (25-23, 25-18) to reach the final, then swept Corona del Mar (25-22, 25-11) to win the title at Epic Volleyball Club in Poway.

It was the Mustangs’ first tournament championship since 2011.

“We were not at our best Friday,” Mira Costa coach Avery Drost said. “We seemed out of rhythm in every part of the game … We were in survival mode and nothing felt easy.”

“(Saturday) we started getting better with every match. We started well and kept improving and they played their best in the final.”

Senior outside hitter Jack Hopkins earned all-tournament honors and junior outside hitter Ben Coordt was selected tournament MVP.

The Mustangs won the tournament in 2009 and finished fifth last year.

Mira Costa is the top-ranked team in the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 poll. Corona del Mar, Loyola, Huntington Beach and Newport Harbor round out the top five.

Redondo preseason tournament

Redondo and Palos Verdes finished tied for fifth at the Redondo preseason tournament two weeks ago.

Rees Barnett (Redondo), Luke Hobus (Palos Verdes) and Jack Kane (Bishop Montgomery) earned all-tournament honors.

South Torrance was the Silver Division champion.
