A suspect who allegedly pummeled a man at a Hermosa Beach restaurant after learning the victim’s red hat had the words “Make America Great Again” written on it in Russian was arrested Tuesday, Oct. 1 at his home in the San Fernando Valley.

Hermosa Beach Police took David Delgado, 32, of Winnetka, into custody at about 9 a.m., Hermosa Beach Police Department Sgt. Robert Higgins said. He was booked on suspicion of robbery and battery with serious injury, and being held in lieu of $100,000 bail, inmate records show.

The victim was using the restroom at Tower 12, 53 Pier Ave., at about 6:40 p.m. on Sept. 2 when he was approached by the suspect. Delgado allegedly asked the meaning of the Russian text on the hat before the assault took place.

It’s not immediately clear why the message allegedly drove him to violence, Higgins said.

“It’s not clear who insulted who, but the hat is at the center of this whole mess,” he said.

Officers believe Delgado punched the victim repeatedly in the face, causing him to fall to the ground, Higgins said. The suspect then stole the man’s hat before fleeing the scene.

Surveillance video and other evidence helped investigators identify Delgado as a suspect.

Details regarding the victim’s injuries were not disclosed.
