Kenneth James Tofaeono, an 18-year-old Torrance man, has been booked for attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a man in broad daylight in the middle of Hawthorne Boulevard in Redondo Beach.
The victim, whose age and name were not released, is in critical condition at a local hospital.
“In broad daylight, these two became involved in an altercation, the suspect pulled out a knife and started repeatedly stabbing the victim right in the middle of Hawthorne Boulevard,” said Redondo Beach Police Captain Jeff Hink.
Redondo Beach and Torrance police were still piecing together details of the crime, which occurred at the corner of Hawthorne Boulevard and 177th Street near the South Bay Galleria. It appeared the attack stemmed from a dispute between the victim and the suspect over a possible stolen cell phone, Hink said.
Hink said the victim was in a vehicle with two other people when they saw the suspect on foot in the parking lot of Islands restaurant.
“The incident started in the parking lot, then went across Hawthorne Boulevard to the center median,” Hink said. “I want to stress that this is not a random event. These two knew each other and were engaged in some sort of dispute prior to today.”
Multiple witnesses were being interviewed in the Islands parking lot around 12:45 p.m. Thursday.
Southbound Hawthorne Boulevard between Artesia Boulevard and 177th Street will be impacted for a few hours, Hink said.
More to come.
