A Redondo Beach man has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to extort money from a woman, with whom he was in a relationship, by using explicit photos he took of her without consent, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department officials said.

On Wednesday, Feb. 5, a woman came into the Moreno Valley Station to report that Joel Daza, 45, had attempted to extort money from her, the sheriff’s department said. He was accused of taking photos of her during some of their intimate encounters, they said.

“He told the victim he would disseminate the photos if she didn’t pay him the money he requested,” officials said. “The suspect also threatened (to) send to out the photographs if she discontinued their relationship.”

Daza agreed to meet the victim at a hotel on Sunnymead Boulevard on Thursday, when detectives did surveillance of the hotel. When he arrived, Daza was arrested without incident, officials said.

Daza was booked on suspicion of extortion, eavesdropping, cyberstalking, revenge porn and harassing by telephone, according to inmate records. He was being held Friday afternoon at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside on $250,000 bail.

The Anaheim Police Department was also investigating Daza for a similar case, the Sheriff’s Department said.
