One man was hospitalized and another arrested after a stabbing and carjacking in Redondo Beach led to a short pursuit and crash in Rancho Palos Verdes on Tuesday, Dec. 29, authorities said.
About about 9 a.m. the suspect approached the victim in the parking lot of King Harbor Plaza in the 600 block of Pacific Coast Highway in Redondo Beach, near a Smart & Final, and demanded the man’s keys to his vehicle before stabbing him and fleeing in the SUV, Lt. Shawn Freeman said.
The victim, believed to be 65 to 75 years old, was taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery and was recovering, Freeman said.
Redondo Beach police asked surrounding agencies to be on the lookout for the SUV, Freeman said. About 9:20 a.m., the Jeep Grand Cherokee was spotted in Rancho Palos Verdes.
The suspect, who was not immediately identified by police, led authorities on a brief pursuit before crashing into another vehicle, telephone poles and a block wall near Western Avenue and Avenida Aprenda, Freeman said.
The collisions left the Jeep with a smashed-in front end, and a telephone pole leaning. The suspect was arrested without further incident and taken to a hospital for treatment, Freeman said.
The driver of the second vehicle was not injured in the collision, the lieutenant said.
