A man died after the car he was driving hit a center median and a pole in Redondo Beach near the Torrance border early Tuesday morning, Jan. 5, authorities said.

Redondo Beach officers were called to near Hawthorne and Artesia boulevards, near the South Bay Galleria, about 2 a.m., and found the car in the southbound lanes of Hawthorne, Sgt. John Anderson said.

Investigators learned the driver was traveling north in the far-left lane on Hawthorne before the car, for unknown reasons, hit the center median south of Artesia, Anderson said.

It wasn’t known how fast the car was traveling, or if impaired or distracted driving were factors.
