When the International Surf Festival began in 1962, it of course, began with a surf contest.

More than five decades later, the long boarders and short boarders are still riding the waves on Saturday morning of the weekend's festivities on the south side of the Hermosa Beach Pier.

In addition to men's and women's long board and short board events, the 2019 competition included divisions for groms—12 and under, juniors as well as a body board slot.

The surf festival, which celebrates beach sports and culture, continues through Sunday with the signature Dwight Crum Pier-to-Pier Swim, paddle board competitions and the junior division of the 6-man volleyball tournament.
