El Segundo police were searching for a man who robbed a woman at gunpoint as she walked to her car at The Point shopping center over the weekend, authorities said.

The 29-year-old woman was in the parking lot of the shopping center on Pacific Coast Highway and Rosecrans Avenue, behind the North Italia restaurant, at about 4 p.m. Sunday when a man in his early 20s approached her, pulled out a gun, and demanded her cellphone, Sgt. Aaron Corkins said.

The victim handed over the Samsung Galaxy smartphone, Corkins said, and the man got into a black Chevrolet Trax SUV with a female driver and fled.

The victim was not hurt, he said.

The suspect is described as African-American, 5-feet-4 to 5-feet-6 tall and with a thin build, Corkins said. He was wearing a red T-shirt with a Nike swoosh. The SUV had paper plates from the Nissani Bros. car dealership in Cuvler City, Corkins said.

Detectives were checking security-video footage in the area.
