Driven by frustration with dating apps, veteran wedding planner Constance Curtis launched The List, which she says is the first mobile matchmaking app for elite singles in Southern California. The app aims to combine what Curtis calls “old fashioned intuition with science and technology.”

Curtis, an El Segundo resident and business owner, believes there can be a better option for singles: a company that bridges the gap between traditional matchmaking and the swipe-right dating culture, and one without the price tag of a standard matchmaker.

“I saw a space in the industry between the dating apps, where practices such as ‘ghosting’ are typical, and matchmaking, which comes with a heavy price tag," said Curtis. "Many people using a matchmaker spend between $14,000 and $25,000 for the service.”

That is not the case working with Curtis and The List.

“I decided on a way to go to take matchmaking online, and create a better experience for everyone.”

Curtis charges a $2000 initiation fee for elite members, followed by a subscription fee of $99 a month. The List is powered by real-life matchmakers and relationship experts with 15 years of combined experience; the team is already growing, Curtis asserts, to accommodate demand for membership.

“For the initiation fee, elite members are met in person, and our goal is to place you with someone as soon as possible. That said, there is no limit to how many months you can pay the subscription fee, unlike standard matchmakers who often set a time limit,” said Curtis.

Elite members receive a personal matchmaker, who works to create matches. They also receive feedback after each date, to further coach users

The app itself is free. Once downloaded, the user creates a free profile and is added to The List’s database of potential suitors for its elite members. Free members have access to the site, but not actual matchmaking services.

However, for $1.99, non-elite members can also purchase “coins” to send messages about suitors they are interested in to the matchmakers.

The List launched on Valentine's Day and Curtis said they have more than 400 downloads for the free app, and so far have 15 elite clients.

Curtis’ 15-year background in wedding planning has allowed her to witness how couples communicate, their chemistry, and how they work together to make decisions. She’s using that knowledge-base in her service.

“I have no plans to merge the two businesses at this point, but since I am obviously so well-connected in wedding planning, if couples we match should want to use that service, we certainly could do so,” she adds.

Still at the starting point for this service, Curtis has more men in the elite membership category and more women than men using the free app.

“We expect there will be a switch in that dynamic soon,” she said.  “We offer a sense of security that both women and men will love.”

One part of being on The List is a hands-on approach not just to matchmaking itself, but also to the dating experience.

“I will make sure how things are going with both parties. I want to make sure we know how things are going when we make connections. I reach out to both elite and free users,” Curtis explains.

According to Curtis, “It’s all about meeting in person and finding that spark. We get a good feel for different personalities, and we always follow up, which is not something you can get on a dating app.”

The List is available for Apple devices.
