Recent studies reveal increased levels of depression in high school students. Teens are having a tough time bouncing back from adversity such as pressure to achieve high grades, substance abuse, campus violence and cyberbullying.

South Bay Families Connected and Beach Cities Health District hosts a forum titled “Grit, Resilience and a Growth Mindset,” held Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 6:30 p.m. at Redondo Union High School. It aims to teach teens to approach obstacles with the determined mindset of high-performing athletes.

The forum, open to all beach cities parents and teens, features UCLA women’s gymnastics coach Valorie Kondos and two-time Olympic gold medal winning U.S. women's water polo coach Adam Krikorian.

The athletes are joined by Dr. Mike Gervais, a local sports psychologist who works with the Seattle Seahawks.

The forum will help non-athlete students "grow their grit," introduce techniques used to train Fortune 500 executives and teach parents how to encourage their teens to persevere during challenges.

The event is Wednesday, Jan. 16, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Redondo Union High auditorium.
