Tabula Rasa, located in Manhattan Beach, is known for selling special gift items from candles to barnwood signs, hats, towels with a beach motif, chef-driven coffee table books, fine food and dinnerware, and so much more.

Owner Maureen McBride opened the store in 2000, and since then, particularly in the last several years, many people have moved to the community, and social media has exploded, McBride said.

“And with all the popular events taking place in downtown Manhattan Beach, there are a lot of people coming to downtown, and we’re exposed to and introduced to people from throughout Southern California.”

McBride said she is most excited about the relaunch of the shop's ecommerce website.

The website offers local delivery and in-store pick-up.

“That really helps shoppers who may find downtown parking a challenge. We are thrilled with offering that convenience factor, and the website allows people to see all of our great products online without having to go to say Amazon. We just launched our delivery service a couple of weeks ago.”

McBride said working with local artisans and hand-curating goods allows her to offer unique items that are difficult to find elsewhere. This includes both national brands such as Voluspa candles, and locally made items.

“We carry beautiful travel wraps that get tucked away in their own little sweater bag, we have amazing reclaimed barn wood signs,” she said. “And we are always looking for new and amazing treasures for our clients, so our inventory changes and stays fresh. We have a great coastal vibe and we travel the world, we are always stocking ours shelves with a continued flow of hand selected merchandise.”

McBride adds that she is more locally-focused now than ever, including artisans from a variety of communities.

“We also customize many items, such as coasters, ornaments, and pillows, and our signs. That is something special, and new in the last couple of years. It’s an area that has really grown for us. We do a lot for weddings, or kids going off to college looking for a great memory keepsake.”

Also popular: “Our coasters, trays, clocks, and ornaments feature photographic elements of things in Manhattan Beach, so it’s like taking something from the beach home with you. And we have whimsical tongue-in-cheek quotes on items, little office signs that you can put on your desk top with a sense of fun and humor and whimsy.”

McBride said the store has been in the same location for almost 20 years and is looking forward to 20 more.

"We love being a part of the community and providing people with things that thrill and delight them,” she said.

She travels annually and curates for the new year, which affords her a way to find new and emerging trends.

And, Tabula Rasa also supports charities such as recently donating a portion of store proceeds to help those affected by fire. McBride reports they raised $1000 for the U.C. Davis VERT Team, an emergency veterinary response team that goes out with the firefighters.

Tabula Rasa is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday and Monday; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Tabula Rasa is located at 919 Manhattan Ave #A in Manhattan Beach.
