The World Surf League Big Wave Awards took place for the first time in the South Bay Thursday night, in conjunction with the kick-off of the inaugural BeachLife Festival in Redondo Beach.

Big wave surfers from around the world were honored and two new categories for women—XXL Biggest Wave and Paddle Awards—were added to the program.

Winners included:

  • South Africa's Grant Baker won for Ride of the Year at Jaws, Maui, Hawaii in November 2018 and as Men's Biggest Paddle Winner
  • Andrea Moller won for Women's Paddle World Record
  • Justine Dupont won for Women's XXL Biggest Wave Surfer and for Hydro Flask Women's Performance
  • Kai Lenny won for Men's XXL Biggest Wave Surfer and for Men's Overall Performance
  • Makua Rothman won for Wipeout of the Year

Moller, who is from Brazil, made history with a Guinness World Records title for Biggest Paddle-In Wave, a 42-foot wave at Pe'ahi, Maui, Hawaii.

“I’d like to congratulate all the performers on an incredible year and this is something I’ve made a goal for myself for a very long time,” said Lenny about his wins.

“I’m blown away to just be up here right here. I’d also like to thank all the water safety, it feels like we have guardians out there and to all the photographers, videographers, to help us relive that moment.”
