A fire in a Redondo Beach garage destroyed a classic 1960s-era Volkswagen van and a 1969 Ford Bronco Tuesday night, a fire official said on Wednesday.
The fire, ignited by engine failure when the resident started one of the cars, fully engulfed the garage in the 1200 block of South Irena Avenue, said Division Chief Rob Rappaport of the Redondo Beach Fire Department.
The owner escaped without injury, Rappaport said.
Responding firefighters, which included those from Manhattan Beach and Los Angeles County, knocked down the blaze before it could spread to the single-family, colonial-style house and neighboring structures.
“They did a great job to save the main residence, which is only about a year old,” the division chief said.
Adjacent homeowners hosed down their homes and garages to prevent embers from possibly igniting those structures.
