To kick off American Martyrs School’s new bicycle safety program for students, Monsignor John Barry blessed the bikes on Monday morning after students and their parents rode to school.
The school’s program will be the first in-class bicycle safety education program in L.A. County. The program for K-8 students will be funded by Beach Cities Health District and designed by the Beach Cities Bicycling Club and the South Bay Bicycle Coalition. The courses center on the “do’s and don’ts” of safe riding and the rules of the road.
“As the beach cities continue to evolve into a more bike friendly environment, we anticipate an increase in cyclists of all ages and ability levels,” said Susan Burden, CEO of Beach Cities Health District. “So it’s important that we begin educating children about how to ride responsibly and safely, as well as teaching them the health benefits cycling offers.”
Burden said she hopes the program will spread to other schools across the South Bay.
