LA Imperial Dance has only been open a year, but the Redondo Beach studio is already garnering praise for its diverse classes from ballroom dance to Latin dancing and ballet.

Co-owners Eduard Sargsyan and Inga Demetryan are high school sweethearts, and have been married for ten years. They began dancing as young children in Armenia, where both grew up.

The couple toured as principal ballet dancers with the Armenian Theatre of Opera and Ballet and the Israel Ballet Company; Sargsyan is a bronze medalist at the International Youth Delphic Games in the Ukraine; Demetryan a U.S. bronze medalist and Fred Astaire World and National Champion.

And domestically, the pair has worked with the Pacific Ballet Theatre as guest artists.

“It was always a dream for us to have our dance school and share our 25 years of experience and knowledge with people who love dancing like we do,” said Demetryan.

The Redondo Beach location is the perfect spot to provide dance classes and form a community, she said.

“Our first priority is to create a family atmosphere for everyone. Like in a family, everyone is an individual, everyone has a different personality, and everyone has different needs. So, we are working and trying to find the ways we can open up people’s personalities through dancing.”

Demetryan said customer needs vary. Some need a cardio workout, some are interested in technique, some want to learn professional dancing, some come just for socializing, finding new friends and for stress relief, she said.

"What makes us unique is that we give to all those people what they are looking for,” said Demetryan.

LA Imperial Dance's most popular classes are the Latin American dance styles, such as the salsa, bachata, merengue and the Argentine Tango and Viennese Waltz, she said.

However, the pair’s most unique class may be their Super Latin Workout.

“That is a non-stop 45-minute dance workout, where you dance different types of elements of cha-cha, mambo, salsa, and merengue combined with stretching."

Another popular class is Ballet Fitness.

"It is created to sculpt a dancer's body with our amazing workout program,” said Demetryan, adding the class tones the arms and abs, while helping posture and poise.

LA Imperial Dance has also created a special program for ice skaters that provides off-ice training and special ballet training. They are also training students to participated in the Olympics, said Demetryan.

The co-founder knows the good word of mouth has drawn many students.

“People found us by word of mouth, because they see the quality of the training and they spread the news about us.”

The couple has traveled and performed worldwide from St. Petersburg to Austria.

“We always performed in leading roles in many ballets, and we used to work with legendary people in the ballet industry such as Maya Plisetskaya, Vladimir Vasiliev, Yuri Grigorovich, Itzik Galilli, and more.”

Ballroom dance has also been a focus of their dance career, with the duo having competed and won many competitions from the United States Dance Championships to the California Star Ball and many other competitions throughout the U.S. according to Demetryan.

However, they are currently not competing.

“All our time is dedicated to the dance studio,” she said.

LA Imperial Dance is located at 903 N. Catalina in Redondo Beach. For more information laimperialdance.com
