In an effort to reduce waste, the Hermosa Beach City School District will stop selling plastic water bottles during lunch time at Hermosa Valley and Hermosa View schools, beginning Wednesday, May 1.

Instead, the district is encouraging students to bring reusable water bottles to school.

Filling stations with filtration systems are installed at both schools to help the move away from plastic water bottles.

According to a statement from HBCSD, more than a million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute. One bottle takes at least 450 years to decompose. Also, it requires three times the water to make the bottle than it does to fill it.
