A man and two women were in custody after allegedly taking a garage door opener from an unlocked car and using it to steal property from a Manhattan Beach home, Thursday, Sept. 13, authorities said.

About 4:45 a.m., a resident was alerted by a Ring video security system to suspicious activity in the garage of the resident’s home in the 1800 block of Oak Avenue, Sgt. Tim Zins said.

The resident called 911. While Manhattan Beach police officers responded, a police sergeant noticed a vehicle leaving the area, Zins said.

The sergeant pulled the vehicle over for vehicle code violations while other officers responded to the home. After interviewing the resident and reviewing the security video, officers discovered the suspect description matched one of the people in the car, Zins said.

The three people in the vehicle were detained while officers searched the vehicle and found stolen property tied to the home, he said.

Officers also found out the suspects entered the garage after taking the garage door opener from the victim’s unlocked parked vehicle.

Montrell Lucas, 28; Mercedes James, 27 and Desarae Spotville, 31, were all arrested on suspicion of residential burglary. All three are Los Angeles residents, police said.

The suspects are being held on $50,000 bail and are scheduled to appear in Torrance Superior Court Monday, Sept. 17, according to jail records.
