Redondo Beach police arrested two individuals Saturday on charges of arson after the boat where they resided caught on fire in King Harbor Marina.

Gary Horn, 68, who owned the roughly 40-foot boat, and his fiance Shawna Keating, 41, were each being held on $500,000 bail for allegedly causing the fire, said Captain Joe Hoffman.

Initial reports that a drug lab was on board the boat turned out to be false, according to Hoffman.

"There was some initial concern on the part of the fire department and that information got conveyed," Hoffman said. "Once that information is put out there we have to take precautions and treat it as if it's a hazardous environment."

The individuals were apparently fighting with one another when the fire was allegedly set intentionally, said Hoffman.

"Hopefully we will have a more specific conclusion soon as to how and why the fire was set," Hoffman said.

Black smoke was seen for miles around as the boat on E dock went up in flames about 4 p.m. on Saturday. Arson investigators continued sifting through the boat, named Alternate Ending, on Sunday.

Hoffman said the boat's occupants had frequent contact with Harbor Patrol officials. Both Horn and Keating were expected to be arraigned on Monday.

Had there been a drug lab on board, Hoffman said the situation could have been a whole lot worse.

"If you have a meth lab, you could end up having an explosion that put other people in harm's way," Hoffman said.
