Exercise and active wear never looked as beautiful as it does at Hermosa Girl, a Hermosa Beach shop whose name refers to the fact that “Hermosa means beautiful, so our name means beautiful women,” according to owner Denise Barrett.

Barrett started her active-wear-focused business in downtown Hermosa three and a half years ago.

“It’s not my first business, my businesses grow and change as I grow. I realized where I was at right now, and what I enjoy doing most and having fun doing is this store.”

Barrett says her most unique items include hoodies, leggings and jackets from brands such as Alo and Beyond Yoga.

“You can easily transition in them from working out to just being comfortable going out. All my clothes are about being on the go, and being active women. We have a busy life these days, and we love wearing beautiful things that are also comfortable,” she explains, noting that outwear jackets and pullovers are among the most popular clothing she carries.

“I appeal to both locals and tourists alike, because our community is a beautiful place, and my shop is a beautiful place that people want to come in and explore,” she said.

There have been some changes in her business since she first opened the store.

“Today women are more and more appreciative of the style and easy comfort of the clothing we carry.”

According to Barrett, three years ago wearing active wear was not as much of a mainstream concept as it is now. The expanded interest in more comfortable clothing rather than more formal wear has been positive for Hermosa Girl.

“I believe looking good and feeling good is what people want the most today,” said Barrett. “We live in the fast lane and we need to be on the go all the time.”

With that in mind, Barrett said her shop is always evolving and looking into new active lines that are popping up.

“I love the designers that we bring into the store, and I think we blend their looks all together… it’s important to me, providing a wardrobe that active women want to wear.”

Barrett said she wants to continue and grow her business, and stay connected to clients in the community.

“I want interaction for people who visit us. Everyone can have a piece of clothing that reminds them of how beautiful the beach cities are. And I also want to create jobs for high school students and others that live in the community to continue our connection with the people who live here.”

Hermosa Girl also operates an online store at Hermosagirlboutique.com, and Barrett foresees expanded growth in that area.

Hermosa Girl is located at 1138 Hermosa Ave. Store hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and until 6 p.m. on Sunday.
