Putting its annual rhythmic spin on the Christian tradition, the 17th annual Palm Sunday Taiko Drum Procession was staged at American Martyrs’ Catholic Church in Manhattan Beach on Sunday.

The march featured performers playing traditional drums as well as more than 50 five-gallon plastic water bottles and other percussion instruments.

Led by American Martyrs’ School Music Director Ron Tanski, the musicians included seventh graders from the school who learn Taiko, the Japanese art of drumming, among other genre of music and percussion, in class.

The Palm Sunday Procession is the students’ “final exam” and their Lenten service to the church.
