The last standing guardhouse from the East German side of the Berlin Wall has been transformed into an art experience that will become a sidewalk installation on Main Street in El Segundo, beginning Friday, Nov. 14, beginning at 7:30 p.m., at the El Segundo Museum of Art.
ESMoA’s current artist-in-residence, Christof Zwiener, acquired the guardhouse, which was located at the entrance to the parking lot of the headquarters of the General German News Service in East Germany. After saving it from destruction, Zwiener transformed it into a temporary exhibition space.
In September, the guardhouse was brought to Los Angeles to mark the 25th anniversary of the fall of the wall thanks in part to the Wende Museum, which will become its permanent home.
