A few years ago I had the wonderful experience of teaching for a summer in New Zealand. Prior to going, I had only seen photos of its green rolling hills populated with lots of sheep, beautifully lush landscapes and exquisite beaches. So, naturally I was immediately sold on the idea. I made great friends while I was there, fell in love with the country, and to my surprise I had the best coffee drinks during my stay.

Since I was a kid I’ve been a coffee drinker. I love the ritual of drinking it every morning, and I love the social aspect of meeting a friend for a cup, but mostly I just love the flavor.  I’ve become a bit of a coffee snob over the years searching for that perfect cup.

My coffee drink of choice is usually a blend of a cappuccino and a latte. I want to taste the flavor of the coffee, but I don’t like a wimpy foam, or too much foam, or too much milk. I’m hard to please when it comes to this. In New Zealand, they have what’s commonly known as a flat white. It is divine, but hard to come by in the states. That is until Two Guns Espresso opened here in Manhattan Beach.

I feel as though someone sent owners Andrew “Stan” Stanisich and Craig Oram to my very own hometown just to make me flat whites whenever I want them. Most of the espresso drinks at Two Guns are made with triple shots of espresso and Straus barista-grade organic milk.  It’s just that perfect blend of milk, coffee and foam that makes a great coffee drink. Two Guns uses Caffe Vita coffee, a Seattle-based brand, which has a wonderfully smooth flavor of nutty-chocolatey deliciousness, and makes just a regular good-old-fashioned cup of brewed coffee special as well.

There are so many things about Two Guns that I love.

For one, the fact that friends Stan and Craig are Kiwis who discovered the South Bay each on different career paths, and they both fell in love with the area. They came together, did their research, and decided a coffee café was much needed in the South Bay.

Two Guns is located in Goat Hill Plaza and is bright and open with only a few tables. The baristas who make your coffee are cheerful and friendly and proudly hand you a perfectly made cup of coffee with a smile. You won’t see customers hovered over their laptops when you walk in. This is the kind of place you go to for the best coffee around, to read the latest news of the world (supplied here daily), to say hello to your neighbor and then head out for the day.  Mornings at Two Guns you can grab a freshly made breakfast sandwich or some heavenly baked goods made from the best local bakeries, Cake Bakeshop and Breadbar. Everything at Two Guns is fresh and delicious and purposefully top quality.

Two Guns opened their doors at the end of 2011 and have already embedded themselves in the community becoming involved with many local organizations and school groups. Along with their coffee shop, Stan and Craig are a wonderful addition to the beach cities. Ironically they’re just the kind of guys with whom you’d want to sit down and enjoy a cup of joe.

Two Guns Expresso is located at 350 N. Sepulveda Blvd. No. 7, in Manhattan Beach.
