Just days before Suzy's Bar & Grill in Hermosa Beach closes its doors for good on June 30, Shrine Inch Nails will perform a benefit concert there Saturday, June 22. The concert is a fundraiser for Shriners for Children Medical Center in Pasadena.

Shrine Inch Nails is a subgroup of the Al Malaikah Shrine Band based at the Shrine Auditorium in downtown Los Angeles. Al Malaikah is the official band for the Shriners for Children Medical Center and helps raise money for the hospital that cares for children with orthopedic issues, burn care and cleft lip/palate issues.

“We don't accept payments for performances... all of the money helps the kids,” said Justin Denlinger, co-director of Al Malaikah Shrine Band and the co-founder and bass player for Shrine Inch Nails.

Trombone player Corey Cohn lives walking distance from Suzy's and approached them to hold a fundraiser. They agreed to a July 6 date, but then the band was notified the bar was closing on June 30.

“Out of their dedication to the community and also the Shrine Hospital, they offered us June 22 to perform... I'm saddened to see they are going to shutter their doors for good,” Cohn said.

While Denlinger is an attorney by day, Cohn is a realtor and contractor.

Cohn said he started playing trombone in the fourth grade, stopped in college and never picked it up again until a year ago when Shrine Inch Nails was being formed.

“The Shriners put out a the call that they would like some musicians to help with their band,” Cohn said. “Thirty-seven years later I dusted it (trombone) off, pulled it out, wasn't that good. But they're are such a welcoming group. They beared with me until I got to the level that I am now.”

Fifteen percent of profits, between 8:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m., when they are performing, will aid the children's hospital. A bucket will also be out to collect donations. Visit ShrinersHospitalsForChildren.org/shc/donate for tax deductible donations.

Denlinger added that any musicians, regardless of ability can volunteer their time to perform with the Shrine jazz or concert band.

Suzy's is located at 1141 Aviation Blvd. in Hermosa Beach.
