Summer Movies

Saint Rocke and the City of Hermosa Beach are expanding the sixth annual Hermosa Beach Summer Concert Series, adding a free movie night on the beach every Saturday in August.

This film series has been designed to bring the community together to celebrate audience favorites on the big screen, as part of a unique beach cinema experience in the heart of downtown Hermosa Beach. Films have been curated by the South Bay Film & Music Festival, with an emphasis on blockbuster movie classics.

“We are dedicated to helping the city bring more art and music to the community, and giving families and residents an event to come together and enjoy our beach in the summer months around great films seemed like the next step in a growing tradition,” said Saint Rocke founder Allen Sanford. “Working with Jon Fitzgerald (SBFF director) and the city council to bring this to life has been very rewarding, and we hope the community finds value in our work.”

Event organizers have programmed three of the four weekends in August, including:

August 6 – To be determined by vote

August 13 – “Stand By Me” (30th anniversary)

August 20 – “Goonies”

August 27 – “Top Gun” (25th anniversary)

The movie choice for Saturday August 6 will be selected by South Bay audiences, who can vote online at hbsummerconcerts.com

“We wanted to create a unique opportunity for the community, and give moviegoers a chance to actively participate. With emerging technologies and social media, creating a poll seemed like a natural path to include the audience in our final selection,” Fitzgerald said.. Audiences will have an opportunity to consider four candidates and make their selection online, through Poll Up. The movie choices are:

  • “Casablanca”

  • “Raiders of the Lost Ark”

  • “City Slickers”

  • “The Endless Summer”

“Our popular Summer Concert Series is a great opportunity to bring family, friends and visitors to Hermosa Beach to enjoy the South Bay’s beautiful beach, great weather, and awesome music’” said Mayor Hany Fangary. “We’re thrilled to expand Hermosa Beach’s great family-friendly events to include movies, and welcome the continued contributions of Allen Sanford of Saint Rocke and Friends of the Parks and Hermosa Cinema Society, as well as the South Bay Film & Music Festival, for providing the backdrop to more great summer nights in Hermosa.”

The summer movies are free to the public and is supported by the city of Hermosa Beach and presenting sponsors, with audiences encouraged to donate to Friends of the Park, the one of Hermosa Beach’s community programs. Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in raffles, with a chance to win Festival Passes and Merchandise. In addition, popcorn will be offered, with contributions benefiting Friends of the Park.
