Ever since I was little, my parents have been taking me to Fritto Misto in Hermosa Beach. The delectable, reasonably-priced Italian cuisine that’s been served here for years has always been our favorite around town. And, my parents frequented the Fritto Misto in Santa Monica before I was born.

To start off your meal, you’ll receive a serving of warm fresh bread and some butter. However, if you’re smart, you’ll ask for oil, vinegar and garlic as well for the perfect starter. I could fill myself up on just Fritto Misto’s bread every time, but the pasta’s so filling that I wouldn’t recommend it.

Next up: appetizers. I’ve probably tried every option on the menu, but the one that sticks out to me would be the calamari. Light, crispy and battered to perfection, this treat is a perfect snack to tide you over until dinner comes without being too greasy or filling. I love the tartar and cocktail sauces it comes with too, and my family is always happy to share it before our meal.

While Fritto Misto’s salads are creative and delicious, I can’t imagine coming here and ordering anything but pasta. My personal favorite, the Mushroom Jalapeno Ravioli, is well-loved in my family, and although I try (and love) lots of other dishes on the menu, I can’t keep myself away from this for too long.

The delicious mushroom-stuffed ravioli is topped in fresh diced jalapeno and cilantro and topped with olive oils, spices and pico de gallo. It sounds untraditional, and maybe it is—but it is refreshing, unlike a lot of pastas and ridiculously tasty!

If this doesn’t sound up your alley, however, there’s a million different pasta dishes to choose from and my next favorite: make your own. By creating your own pasta dish, you can choose your own pasta (such as stuffed, gnocchi, fusilli or linguini), a sauce (there are more than 20), and add-ins like meat or anchovies. What I prefer, when I’m creating my own, is the mushroom ravioli (of course) and the pink sauce with some pancetta on top. For those not as obsessed with the wonder of pasta as I am, pink sauce is usually a mix of tomato (red) and alfredo (white). Fritto Misto’s pink sauce is simply irresistible, especially with that sprinkle of cured pork meat on top.

As for dessert, the pasta servings are large and too yummy to put aside, so if you’re anything like me you might finish your meal and then be too full to try anything. But if you do save room, the flourless chocolate cake, tiramisu, lemon bar and creme brulee are all spectacular ways to end your night out! All are scrumptious and all are homemade, so it really just depends on what you’re in the mood for and if you are sharing.

In all, the employees here have been so kind for as long as I can remember and the food is the best casual Italian meal around. It’s a staple in Hermosa and well-loved by any local you’ll meet.

Fritto Misto is located at 316 Pier Ave. in Hermosa Beach. For more information, call (310) 318-6098.
