Michael Keegan, owner of Manhattan Beach Bread and Bagel, will be rolling back prices 25 years on Monday Jan 29.

Michael Keegan opened Manhattan Bread and Bagel 25 years ago with wife Lynn Olson because they couldn't find bagels in the beach cities.

“My wife was a disenchanted lawyer at the time and wanted to open a restaurant,” recalled Keegan, a former Hermosa Beach councilmember/mayor. “I said, 'Well maybe we should open a bagel bakery.' We opened and within three years, there were five in the city.”

Keegan is celebrating the milestone from Monday, Jan. 29 through Super Bowl Sunday by rolling back the price of all fresh baked bagels to 45 cents, what they cost in 1993.

Keegan said they have had a “great run” in Manhattan Beach, with more than 20 million bagels sold. They continue to make everything from scratch, from their breads to the bagels, as well as croissants, cookies and muffins.

With 24 employees, they are operating 24 hours a day, baking overnight so they can have the kitchen free during the day. Keegan said they have hired more than 50 students from Mira Costa High School over the years, including one who started her own catering company which has 35 employees. He also has a number of longterm employees, including their head bagel baker who has been there since the first day.

“This has been a training ground for some,” Keegan said.

While they have followed some trends over the years, Keegan said adaptability has been a large part of their success.

“I keep pouring more money into the facility, keeping up with the times, making minor remodels and changing and adapting a little, but keeping with our core menu items,” Keegan said.

Keegan said the community has been supportive and they have given back over the years, especially to the schools. For years they have sponsored the Schools Knead the Dough gift card sale contest, which helped raise thousands to assist PTO boards in buying supplies and helping students.

“We feel the more we give, the more we're going to get back and it has worked out that way,” Keegan said.

Manhattan Bread and Bagel is located at 1812 N. Sepulveda Blvd.
