As the days get shorter, one of the few positive things about losing daylight so early is the chance to catch the sunset at happy hour.

To make your next sunset a memorable one in Redondo, Hermosa or Manhattan Beach, consider taking it in with someone special at any one of these seven South Bay bars that offer a birds eye view near the water, not to mention a great happy hour.

Tony's on the Pier

First opened in 1952 by Tony Trutanich, Tony's on the Pier -- also known as Old Tony's -- is one of the most iconic bars and restaurants in all the South Bay. Not much has changed in this tiki bar including the netting and glass balls that hang from the ceiling. It's from the crow's nest up top that you'll find one of the best sunset happy hour situations in all of Redondo. Get $1.50 off all beverages from 3 to 7 p.m. weekdays. And don't forget to have a Fire Chief, the local suped up version of a Mai Tai. They've only sold about seven million.

Shade Redondo

Having opened earlier this year, Shade Redondo offers the latest restaurant to grace the Redondo Beach waterfront at its Sea Level establishment. But if you really want to catch a great sunset at this plush hotel, visit the pool deck where you can sip on your favorite cocktail and watch the sun dissapear over the harbor.  Enjoy half priced appetizers, beer, wine and cocktails at Sea Level every weekday from 3 to 6 p.m.

Shade Redondo, 655 North Harbor Drive, Redondo Beach (310) 921-8940

Blue Water Grill

If it's more of a maritime environment you're looking for, consider the classic bar at Blue Water Grill where food and drink happy hour extends every weekend from 3 to 6 p.m. Here you can mix among the boaters in this casual yacht club style environment as the sun beautifully sets through a forest of masts.

The Chart House

There are few places in California where you can glimpse a sunset any closer to the ocean from a restaurant than you can at The Chart House in Redondo Beach. The California Coastal Commission will see to it. So take advantage of this unique perspective as you sit almost right over the shore-break to watch the sun descends across the horizon in a rainbow of colors. Known for its prime rib, seafood and a hearty salad bar, The Chart House has been a mainstay of fine dining in the South Bay since 1969. Enjoy happy hour at The Chart House with discounts on food and drinks each weekday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Hennessey’s Tavern Hermosa

Out of all the Hermosa Beach Pier Plaza establishments, the one that's become a mecca for sunset seekers is the top deck bar at Hennessey's Tavern. For obvious reasons, this bird's eye view offers a top-notch sunset perch and happy hour situation. From 4 to 7 p.m. choose from any number of drink and food specials for $5.

Ocean Bar

For a sunset and happy hour experience set a little further back, consider Ocean Bar. While it's popular among the party crowd at night, this Hermosa Beach establishment also has a great patio where you can open a window and take in the breeze while the sun plummets into the Pacific and turns the sky red. Food comes from Abigaile's Restaurant downstairs. Enjoy food and drink specials each weekday from 5 to 7 p.m.

The Strand House

Another great elevated perch to catch the sunset with fantastic food and service is at The Strand House in Manhattan Beach. While a fire damaged the kitchen earlier this year, the upscale eatery known for steak, seafood and pizza offers killer views at its StrandBar. Here you can take in the gorgeous California sunset over the iconic Manhattan Beach Pier, truly a world class view.
