LA BioMed to Hold Pulmonary Open House May 15
Panel with leading pulmonary experts plus free health screenings and lung function tests
The Rehabilitation Clinical Trials Center at the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute (LA BioMed) will be hosting an open house on May 15th from 11:00am to 4:00pm at the CDCRC Building on LA BioMed’s campus (1124 West Carson St., Torrance CA 90502). The event – Advances in Lung Health Open House – will showcase LA BioMed’s internationally renowned and cutting-edge pulmonary research as well as an open panel discussion with world-leading pulmonologists titled “What’s New in Pulmonary Medicine” from 3:00pm to 4:00pm. Health screenings, lung function tests, vendors relevant to pulmonary patients, prizes, and food will all be provided free of charge.
We believe this is a compelling opportunity for reporters who cover public health, showcasing what has been a very effective public health strategy that has provided potentially lifesaving diagnoses and education to hundreds of patients in a little more than a year.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth-biggest killer in the United States with an estimated 15 million undiagnosed cases. The Rehabilitation Clinical Trials Center at LA BioMed has been running a mobile screening program over the past 15 months. Testing close to 1,000 people, 20% of patients were identified with having abnormal lung function. This event is aimed at attracting members of the community who might benefit from having a no-cost lung function test or to learn more about personal pulmonary health.
LA BioMed recently opened a $63-million, four-story, 78,000 square-foot facility, which is one of the most advanced medical research buildings in the country. It contains both wet and dry labs, freezer farms, an auditorium that can seat over 100 people, and an 18,000 square-foot bioscience incubator operated by BioLabs that can host up to 30 bioscience startups and offers $1 million in shared equipment, private offices and meeting space. The new facility should attract many more promising researchers to LA BioMed, which has a track record of successfully commercializing discoveries, having spun off 13 startups in the last 12 years.
