Loving Life is The Beach Reporter theme this week.
As I write this I wonder what that means for everyone reading this. It must have a different meaning for everyone, as each of us embrace life in many ways. I particularly like being around people whose love for life is infectious. You know, those types of individuals who are doers and who take life on without letting fear get in the way. They usually have a great passion for their work and will stop at nothing to do what brings them joy and more importantly what they do brings joy to others. I wish I could bottle up those types of individuals spirit and joie de vivre. I find myself seeking out those people and they are who I want to write about.
Independent restaurant owner Lisa Hemmat is one of those people. She bought Lido Di Manhattan in Manhattan Beach when she was in her 20s and since 2004 has been hands on in the everyday details of running it. It seems that bringing fresh ideas to her customers’ dining experience and challenging them to try new things is what makes Hemmat so unique. It’s not enough to serve them fresh made in-house pasta, sauces, and made fresh daily bread and desserts, but she also wants to entertain her diners.
Thursday nights at Lido are the popular wine tastings in which wine makers from local vineyards serve up tastings, chat about the wine making process, and there is great food and conversation served up with it! Something very unique to Lido are the Flamenco dancers and entertainers who put on a fabulous dinner show once a month (the next one is Sunday, March 10), as well as Friday night guitarists and every other Saturday jazz musicians play while you enjoy all the wonderful food.
Lido is California-Italian themed in both flavors and ambience. Its relaxed California vibe pairs nicely with the fresh pastas and seafood, as well as the locally grown produce. Wine selection is plentiful with an emphasis on California wines, but also accommodating wines from all over the world.
Hemmat is a first level sommelier, so she shares not just her love for food and wine, but her knowledge is a great asset to her customers. Sitting down with them and talking wine over a meal is not out of the ordinary, and that is one of the things that make her and Lido Di Manhattan uniquely special.
Lido is a Blue Zones certified restaurant, which certainly adds to the dining experience as the Blue Zones concept and Lido’s cuisine make a great match. A lot of thoughtful care goes into each dish prepared and each glass of wine poured. You can definitely taste it, but also feel it.
That Lido feeling encompasses all that “loving life” is about which is great food, good wine, wonderful people, music, sharing, and laughter.
